“Portland, singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player Ralph Archenhold has a warm sense of humor and an unabashedly sentimental streak as he takes us on a tour of some of his favorite old standards, TV show themes, assorted cover tunes, and original songs. He plays several types of harmonica to nice effect; particularly the echo harp, adding an old-world accordian-like texture that enhances the nostalgic mood. The title alludes to his childhood barber, who is remembered with affection and humor in Archenhold’s own ‘Lonnie’s Song’: ‘Lonnie’s no longer there/neither is most of my hair.’ His style is easy and unaffected, letting the songs and tunes speak for themselves, with strong guitar fingerpicking and heartfelt vocals. The eclectic set includes ‘Paper Moon,’ the Burns and Allen theme ‘Love Nest,’ an unexpected cover of Béla Fleck’s ‘Reverie,’ and five original songs. The strongest of these is ‘Dina’s Song (Waltz With Me),’ with its beautiful melody and chord changes and simple, sincere expression of desire. Archenhold sings it with just the right balance of heartache and sweetness, giving one of his finest vocal performances on the entire album.
